Day 19 of 80

Tender as a Mother

Chapter VIII·Manuscript C·Mercy
Context
Thérèse lost her own mother at age four. Yet she came to know God as more tender than any mother — a God who forgives involuntary failings before they are even confessed, who draws us forward with caresses rather than rebukes.

The Lord is more tender than a mother, and I have sounded the depths of more than one mother's heart. I know that a mother is ever ready to forgive the involuntary failings of her child. How often have I not experienced this! No rebuke could have touched me more than a single one of your caresses.

My nature is such that fear makes me shrink; with love, not only do I advance, I fly.
