Day 60 of 80

Simple and Hidden Virtues

Chapter VIII·Manuscript C·The Little Way
Context
The aged foundress Mother Genevieve showed Thérèse that holiness need not be dramatic or extraordinary. The truest holiness is 'simple and hidden' — free from illusion, free from spectacle. It is the holiness Thérèse spent her whole life pursuing.

Before speaking of my impressions at the time of her death, I should like to tell you what a joy it was to have lived for some years with a soul whose holiness was not inimitable, but lay in the practice of simple and hidden virtues.

Such holiness seems to me the most true, the most holy; it is the holiness I desire, for it is free from all illusion.
